nextstep Community News, Featured News, News, Village News The Village of Menands is proud to issue an Executive Order recognizing Juneteenth as a holiday to commemorate the Emancipation of African Americans. June 19, 1865 is recorded in history as the official end of the Civil War and when the Emancipation Proclamation, signed by President Lincoln on January 1, 1863, was able to take effect nationwide. Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States and celebrates African American freedom and achievement. Today will be a day to reflect on this important and meaningful date in history, as well as the changes still needed to create a fair, just and equal society. Juneteenth Executive Order June 18, 2020
