One of my favorite things about living in Menands is the strong sense of community. There are events throughout the year but Menands was rich in community spirit during the month of October and especially the weekend of October 13th.
The Menands Farmers Market held their annual Harvest Festival on October 13th, with farmers and other vendors selling locally grown and locally made products, hay rides, live music, etc. in support of our local farmers. The Market was bustling with activity, with plenty of seasonal products including pumpkins, apples, pies, cider donuts and more. I have come to know many of the farmers personally and have the utmost respect for the endless hours they work to provide fresh produce to our community. With this growing season coming to a close I am already looking forward to next year with new locally grown products and special events throughout the season.
Also on October 13th, James Rigney, owner and head trainer of Rezultz Training Studio in Menands, and his staff, hosted a ZUMBA event in the parking lot of Riverview Center where his studio is located. This event was in support of a cure for breast cancer and I was thrilled to be asked to help kick off the event. Looking out over the crowd of over 300 ZUMBA enthusiasts, many dressed in pink, was very exciting. James believes that when his clients participate in his program they are not only investing in their own health but also in a company that prides itself in supporting local charities. He is already thinking about an even bigger event in the future. Best wishes to James and his staff.
Additionally on October 13th, Menands resident Lynda Long and her committee, organized a Fall Festival in support of Derek Murphy (son of Village Police Officer John Murphy), who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. The event was a huge success, thanks to the hard work of the volunteers in organizing vendors, a bake sale, raffles, food and beverages, kid’s activities, live music and Cow Plop Bingo. People came from all over to enjoy the Festival and support Derek. Congratulations to all who generously gave of their time to ensure the success of this wonderful event.
The outpouring of support in Menands is also prevalent in our business community. Following an industrial accident at Gerome Technologies on October 12th, General Manager Mark Smisloff, said that without the help from his staff, the Village, Fire and Police Depts. and his business neighbors from True Value Hardware, Ash Trading, Farrell Bros. and Subway, he would not have been up and running again by Monday. After touring the facility after the accident, Mark stated that of all the places he has done business, Menands is the best. I couldn’t agree more and am grateful that no one was injured.
It is heartwarming to participate in these community events and to see the continued outpouring of support from the people of Menands. November will bring the annual food drive to support local food pantries and also a Military Appreciation Parade and Picnic in support of the men and women of our armed forces. Watch for details in the Newsletter and on the Village Website.
Until next time,
Mayor Meg
