Mayor’s Message-6/21/13

  June 20, 2013

Safety
I would like to pass along a reminder to all residents to be aware of scam artists. I recently received a call and the caller id said “block”. I usually let unidentified calls go to my answering machine but decided to pick up this call. The recording said “we regret to inform you that your bank card has been blocked. Press 1 to reactivate it.” Instead of pressing 1, we called the bank on the number on the back of our card and they confirmed it was a scam. They reiterated that a banking institution would NEVER ask for personal information over the phone. If you receive any calls asking for personal information, hang up and call the business directly with a number from your card or statements to confirm the call. Chief O’Brien has posted other warnings, including scam artists soliciting at your door. Please heed the warnings for your own safety. If at any time you feel uncomfortable about a situation do not hesitate to contact the Menands Police.

Congratulations
Superintendent Kathy Meany is retiring at the end of the school year. I have enjoyed a close working relationship with Kathy over the past six years and wish her the very best in her retirement. I look forward to working with Dr. Maureen Long as she begins her journey as Superintendent here in Menands. Congratulations to all of the Menands students in the 2013 graduating class in all levels of education. On a personal note, Jim and I are very proud of our daughters Melissa (Villanova) and Michele (Holy Cross) who both graduated Cum Laude in May. They began their education at Menands School, with some of the best teachers in our area, paving the way for high school and college. The dedication of our teachers in Menands is commendable. I wish them all a safe and relaxing summer.

Economic Development
John Stangle, Paul Reuss and I attended an open house at Albany Truck Sales located on Harts Lane. In 2012, the company undertook a significant upgrade of their facilities including the addition of a new truck servicing building to provide expanded repair and diagnostic services to their customers. We enjoyed a great lunch while talking to the owners and members of their staff. The open house was very well attended and included many vendors. I will be returning soon for a full tour of their facility. The company moved to 90 Harts Lane in Menands in 2003 and expanded its inventory to include new manufacturers.
